Active-Passive
Genel Kullanım
“Etken/Edilgen Çatı” olarak adlandırılan bu iki yapı eylemi gerçekleştiren öznenin durumuna göre belirlenir.
Eğer eylemi gerçekleştiren cümlenin öznesi olarak mevcutsa cümle “Active (Etken)” yapıdadır.
Thieves stole a massive gold coin from the Bode Museum in Berlin.
(Çalma eylemini gerçekleştirenler cümlede özne olarak kullanılmıştır.)
Eğer cümlenin öznesi eylemi gerçekleştiren değil de eylemden etkilenen nesne ise ve eylemi gerçekleştiren cümlenin öznesi olarak mevcut değilse cümle “Passive (Edilgen)” yapıdadır.
A massive gold coin was stolen from the Bode Museum in Berlin.
(Çalma eylemini gerçekleştirenler cümlede özne olarak kullanılmamıştır. Cümlenin öznesi çalma işleminden etkilenen nesnedir.)

Kullanılan Durumlar
1 – Önemli olanın eylemi yapan değil, eylemin kendisi olduğu durumlarda Passive yapı kullanılır.
Eiffel Tower was built in 1889.
2- Eylemi gerçekleştirenin bilindiği ve söylemeye gerek duyulmadığı durumlarda Passive yapı kullanılır.
50 protestors have been arrested.
3- Eylemi gerçekleştirenin bilinmediği durumlarda Passive yapı kullanılır.
A cat was run over this morning.
4- Akademik cümlelerde ve makalelerde genellikle Passive yapı kullanılır.

Reduction of Passive Relative Clause
Eğer Relative Clause Passive yapıda ise
“Relative Pronoun (who/which/that) ve “be” fiili atılarak sadece V3 kullanılabilir.
A man from Dublin, who was stopped on suspicion of drink driving, was arrested.

Reduction of Passive Relative Clause in Continuous Tenses
Eğer Passive Relative Clause “Continuous Tense” olarak kullanıldıysa Relative Pronoun (who/which/that) ve am/is/are/was/were atılır ve sadece “being V3” kullanılabilir.
One shouldn’t trust a study that is being carried out by amateurs.

Superlative, the only, the first/the last veya that clause içinde modal kullanımı gibi durumlarda kısaltma “to be +V3” şeklinde yapılır.

Zaman, Koşul, Kıyaslama ve Zıtlık bağlaçları gibi bağlaçlarla oluşturulan “Zarf Cümlecikleri” edilgen yapı ile oluşturulduğunda “Ortak özne” ve “be” fiili atılabilir.

Using Passive Voice with Active Noun Clauses
Ardından “Noun Clause” gelen fiiller genel olarak iki farklı şekilde edilgen olarak kullanılabilirler.
İlk yöntem olarak bütün bir Noun Clause passive ana fiilin öncesinde IT zamiri ile belirtilir.
Diğer yöntemde ise Noun Clause’a ait özne passive ana fiilden önce kullanılır ve Noun Clause içindeki yan fiil aktifse to+V1 ile cümleye devam edilir.

1- By Kullanımı
Önemli olmamasına rağmen özne belirtilmek istendiğinde “by” ile cümleye eklenebilir.

Edilgen sorularda ve sıfat cümleciklerinde eylemi yapan soruluyorsa veya niteleniyorsa “by” kullanmak zorunludur.

I know the writer whom this book was written by.

2- Intransitive Verbs
Fiiller nesne alma durumlarına göre ikiye ayrılırlar ve geçişli/geçişsiz olarak adlandırılırlar.
Geçişsiz fiiller nesne almazlar, bu yüzden de edilgen formları yoktur, yani daima etken olarak kullanılırlar.
agree, appear, arrive, become, belong, collapse, consist, cost, depend, die, disappear, emerge, exist, fall, go, hiccup / hic-cough, inquire, knock (sound), laugh, lie (recline or tell untruth), live, look (seem), last (endure), occur, remain, respond, result, rise, sit, sleep, sneeze, stand, stay, swim, vanish, wait …
2- Monotransitive Verbs
Tek nesne alan geçişli fiiller edilgen yapıya dönüştüğünde fiilden sonra bir nesne gelmez. Bu tür fiillerin edilgen olduğunu fiilin ardından sıfat, zarf, zarf cümleciği veya preposition gelmesinden anlayabiliriz.
These equipments should be used carefully.

Suspects are accused of being involved in a murder.

3- Bitransitive Verbs
Bazı geçişli fiiller iki nesne alabilirler. Çoğu zaman edilgen yapı iki nesne ile farklı şekilde yapılabilir.
The professor gave the books to the students.

The books were given to the students.

(Passive 2)
Bitransitive Verbs (TO)
Preposition olarak iki nesne arasında “To” kullanılan bazı fiil örnekleri aşağıdaki gibidir.
VERB + SMB/SMTHNG + TO + SMB/SMTHNG
give, lend, offer, pass, post, read, sell, send, show, promise, tell.
Bitransitive Verbs (FOR)
Preposition olarak iki nesne arasında “For” kullanılan bazı fiil örnekleri aşağıdaki gibidir.
VERB + SMB/SMTHNG + FOR + SMB/SMTHNG
book, buy, get, cook, keep, bring, make, pour, save, find.
4- Passive as an Adjective (Stative Passive)
Edilgen yapılar durum bildirdiklerinde cümlede sıfat görevi görürler.
Children broke my car’s windshield.
(Active)
My car’s windshield was broken by the children.
(Passive)
My car’s windshield was broken.
(Stative Passive / Adjective)
4- Usage of get+V3
Çoğunlukla “be + V3” kalıbı ile kullanılan edilgen yapı bazı durumlarda “get+V3” kullanarak da verilebilir. Özellikle bir önceki maddede bahsedilen Stative Passive (Adjective) kullanımında anlam karmaşası oluşmaması için bu yöntemle durum anlamı eyleme dönüştürülür.
I was fired yesterday after getting my second check since the store opened up.

İstisnai Durumlar
1- need / want / require
Bu fiillerin ardından edilgen yapı kullanımında istisnai bir kullanım mevcuttur.
“to be V3” yapısı yerine aynı anlamı vermek için “Ving” kullanılabilir.
My car needs to be repaired.
My car needs repairing.
2- need / want / would like / prefer
Yukarıdaki fiiller araya nesne aldıklarında aşağıdaki şekilde kullanımları da mevcuttur.
Verb + Object + (to be) V3
I need him to be sent to the other side of the country where he can’t play with her emotions any more.
I need him sent to the other side of the country where he can’t play with her emotions any more.
3- Labile Verbs (Ergative Verbs)
bake / boil / break / clean / freeze / increase / open / prove / read / sell / ring
Yukarıda adı geçenler gibi bazı fiillerin direkt nesneleri özne pozisyonunda olduğunda geçişsiz hale gelen fiil etken kullanılmasına rağmen edilgen anlamı taşırlar.
Your children break the elevator every other day.
