Kullanılan Durumlar
1 – Geçmişte gerçekleşmesi beklenilen eylemleri bildiren cümlelerde Future in the Past Tense kullanılır.
We were going to play tennis at 9 p.m yesterday.
Dün saat 9’da tenis oynayacaktık.
(Geçmiş bir zamanda gerçekleşmesi beklenen eylem.)
I was going to call you last night.
Dün gece seni arayacaktım.
(Geçmiş bir zamanda gerçekleşmesi beklenen eylem)
2 – Çoğu zaman geçmişte niyet edilen, olması planlanan veya beklenilen eylemlerin ek bilgiyle gerçekleşmediği vurgulanır.
We were going to call you when you did.
Sen aradığında biz seni arayacaktık.
(Aramaya niyetlenmiştik ki sen aradın. Dolayısıyla bizim arama eylemimiz gerçekleşmedi)
3 – Geçmiş zaman içinde gelecek anlamı vermek için “would” kullanılabilir. Future in the Past Tense ile yapılan “Would” içeren eylemlere daha kesin gözüyle bakılır.
Our plan would be succesful, but we didn’t deliver it.
Planımız başarılı olacaktı ama biz onu teslim etmedik.
(Geçmiş zamanda gelecek ifadesi bildiren cümle)
4 – “was/were (about) to + V1” kalıbı da bu zaman için kullanılabilir.
I was (about) to tell you a joke the moment the teacher came.
Tam öğretmen geldiği anda size fıkra anlatacaktım .
(Geçmişte planlanmış fakat gerçekleşmemiş)

Zaman İfadeleri
Past Simple Tense ile Future in the Past Tense ile yapılan cümlelerde aynı zaman ifadeleri kullanılabilir fakat anlamın farklı olduğu unutulmamalıdır.
1 – “last ……” kalıbı
night, week, year, Monday ve benzeri ifadelerle tamamlanır.
Çevirisi “geçen …….” şeklinde yapılır.
The explorers were going to start their journey last semester.
Kaşifler, yolculuklarına geçen dönem başlayacaklardı.
2 – “a(n)/two/three/a few etc. ……(s) ago” kalıbı
hour, day, week, month, year ve benzeri ifadelerle tamamlanır.
Çevirisi “bir/iki/üç/birkaç vs. ……. önce” şeklinde yapılır. Birden fazla zaman için kullanılacaksa sonuna çoğul yapmak için “-s” takısı eklenir.
He would finish the project three days ago, but unexpected challenges arose.
Projeyi üç gün önce bitirecekti, ancak beklenmedik zorluklar ortaya çıktı.
They were about to board the train an hour ago; however, it got delayed due to technical issues.
Bir saat önce trene bineceklerdi / binmek üzereydiler; fakat tren teknik sorunlar nedeniyle gecikti.
3 – yesterday, then, in 1986, at the time, once, at the/that time, previously, in ancient times, formerly, in old times, erstwhile, before now, in antiquity gibi zaman ifadeleri geçmiş zamana ait ifadelerdir.
The exchange of coins were going to be the primary method of trade after people had used bartering for a long time in antiquity.
Antik çağda insanlar uzun bir süre boyunca takas yöntemini kullandıktan sonra, madeni paraların değiş tokuşu ticaretin temel yöntemi olacaktı.
