Types of Adjectives
Present Participles
Tek kelimeden oluşan sıfatlar farklı yöntemlerle yapılabilirler ve yapılış yöntemlerine göre anlam değişikliğine de uğrayabilirler.
1 – Bazı fiiller veya isimler “Ving” aldıklarında sıfat özelliği kazanırlar. Bu yapılar Present Participle olarak adlandırılır.
The global cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, which has drawn interest from a spectrum of investors, is not only seeing a rise in cost, but in electricity consumption at an alarming rate.
2- Present Participle (Ving) ile kurulan sıfatlar eylemi gerçekleştiren ismi niteler.
What struck both of us was that there were huge gaps in Houdini’s life story and some puzzling inconsistencies.
3 – Present Participle (Ving) ile kurulan sıfatlar eylemin devam ettiğini belirten durumlarda da isimlerden önce kullanılabilirler.
When the reporters asked the Afghan president about growing concerns that the southern province of Helmand could collapse to the Taliban, he dismissed them.
4 – Present Participle (Ving) olarak kurulan sıfatlar nitelenen ismin kullanım amacını da anlatabilirler.

Past Participles
Bazı fiiller “Ving” yerine “V3” alarak da sıfat özelliği kazanırlar. Bu yapılara da Past Participle denir. Past Participle ile Present Participle arasında anlamca farklar bulunmaktadır.
1 – Present Participle (Ving) ile kurulan sıfatlar eylemi gerçekleştiren ismi nitelerken Past Participle (V3) sıfatlar eylemden etkilenen ismi niteler.
The Lecturer was so boring that everyone left the hall.
The Lecturer got bored since everyone left the hall.
2 – Present Participle (Ving) ile kurulan sıfatlar eylemi gerçekleştiren ismi nitelerken devamlılık bildirir. Past Participle (V3) sıfatlar ise eylemden etkilenen ismi nitelerken tamamlanmışlık bildirir.
You shouldn’t try to taste the roasting chicken as the oven is too hot to touch.
Turkish people usually serve roasted chicken with rice.

Types of Adjectives
Compound Adjectives
Sıfatlar tek kelimeden oluştuğu gibi iki kelime bir araya gelerek de sıfat oluşturabilir. Bunu yapmanın farklı yöntemleri vardır.
1 – Adj/Noun/Adverb + Present Participle (Ving)
I need a book to raise a well–behaving dog.
(Adverb + Ving)
A long–enduring mind is a real gift.
(Adjective + Ving)
Our social needs have been crushed by life–consuming careers.
(Noun + Ving)
2 – Adj/Noun/Adverb + Past Participle (V3)
Occasionally, the “bad kids” appeal to well–behaved teenagers.
(Adverb + V3)
We have developed a technology that allows vehicle seats to easily be pre–adjusted automatically.
(Adjective + V3)
T-800 is one of the first artificial intelligence based movie characters.
(Noun + V3)
3 – Number + Noun
Not: Sayı çoğul olmasına rağmen ardından gelen isim tekil kullanılmışsa tamlama sıfat olarak kullanılmıştır.
I live in a 15-story building.
There has been a 12-hour delay for the flight.
We have been looking for a five-star hotel for ages.
4 – Adjective + Noun
Finnish high-technology exports shrunk 45 percent last year to levels last seen in 1997 as mobile phone sales plummeted, official statistics showed Monday.
You had better try to find out how to avoid game lag on a low-end system instead of buying high-quality hardware.
During our visit to Turkey, several drivers attempted to refuse payment for short-distance trips.

Adjectives as Nouns
Sıfatlar bazı durumlarda isim olarak da kullanılabilirler. Bu tür sıfatların başında “the” kullanılır ve arkalarından nitelenen bir isim gelmez.
1 – Bu tür sıfatlar bir grup insanı nitelerken çoğul takısı almazlar fakat çoğul fiil kullanılır.
Frank ends up in a shelter for the homeless and starts a brand new Gallagher family for himself.
I have always wondered how the blind know what to wear.
2 – Bir milliyetten olan insanları grup olarak anlatmak için sıfatlar isim olarak kullanılırlar. “-sh, -se, -ss, -ch” ile bitenler hariç çoğul “-s” takısı alırlar.
Fiil daima çoğul kullanılır.
The French have followed the example of their Roman antecedents, as the Americans have done that of their Anglo-Saxon progenitors.
3 – Soyut kavramlar anlatılırken de sıfatlar ismin yerine geçebilir.
Fiil daima tekil kullanılır.
The journey to the impossible is not for those who have never known what the difficult is.
The wrong has always been put aside by the right.

Nouns as Adjectives
Bazı durumlarda isimler de sıfat olarak kullanılabilir. Bu durumlarla aşağıdaki gibi karşılaşılabilir.
1- Nitelenen isim yapıldığı malzeme ile nitelenirken isimler sıfat olarak kullanılabilir.
Scientific research indicates that life can be lengthened by 10 years living in a wood house.
2- İsmin yapılma amacı nitelenirken. Bu kullanım aitlik ile karıştırılmamalıdır.
Those are the girls bike that my daughter is constantly asking for.
Don’t forget to lock our girls’ bike.

Adjectives Used (A)lone
Genellikle başına “a” eklenerek fiilden dönüşmüş sıfatların ardından isim gelmez.
You shouldn’t be asleep at the wheel.
The vessel is still afloat.
He was afraid.
I think Hitler is still alive.
His parents shouldn’t have left the poor dog at home alone.
“No five fingers are alike” is a Turkish saying generally used to indicate the differences among the same family members.

Metaphorical Adjectives
Bazen sıfatlar gerçek anlamlarının dışında Mecaz Anlam vermek için de kullanılabilir. Mecaz anlam veren sıfatlar isimlere ek gelerek yapılabildiği gibi, yalın olarak da kullanılırlar.
Her sunny face was just what I wanted to see.
She made a fatal mistake when she signed the agreement.

Adjectives for Emphasis
Sıfatlar arkasından gelen isimlere vurgu katmak için de kullanılırlar.
Sınırlayıcı olanları Translation, Restatement ve Paragraf sorularında belirleyicidir.
I saw the killer with my own eyes.
This was the very book that I wanted.
They know what their main problem is.
His was the only real success I know of.

Exclamatory Adjectives
Ardından gelen isimlerle ilgili güçlü duygular belirten sıfatlar ünlem bildirirler. Bu anlamda kullanılan What soru kelimesinin ardından genellikle isim gelir.
What a blessing!
What an idea!
What a mistake!
What a genius she is!
