Genel Kurallar
İki kişinin, nesnenin, grubun veya eylemin kıyaslanması için kullanılan kıyaslama cümlelerinde kullanılırlar.
-er eki okunuşu tek heceli ve bazı iki heceli sıfatlarda ve düzensiz zarflarda kullanılır.
The children of Irish parents are taller than those of German parents.
The young boy was driving faster than he should have been doing at the time of the accident.

“More ve less” genellikle okunuşu 2 veya daha fazla heceli sıfatlarda ve tüm düzenli zarflarda (-ly eklenerek zarf yapılanlar) kullanılır.
Regular speeches tend to be less controversial than persuasive ones.
When the steel is heated the particles gain more energy and vibrate more vigorously.

1- “than” kullanımı cümlede kıyaslanan ikinci durumun, eylemin, ismin açıkça anlaşıldığı durumlarda gerekli değildir.
Of course, I envy that he is a better player.

Istanbul is the most crowded city in Turkey; thus, Izmir is more comfortable.
( than Istanbul)
2- than + Noun (Ving)
I think studying is more relaxing than watching T.V
Some cell phones have been far more expensive than computers.
3- than + SVO
He is evidently happier than I have ever known him.
4- than + Subject Pronoun + V
than + Object Pronoun
Mika was more gifted than he was.
Mika was more gifted than him.
5- Passive cümleler PAST PARTICIPLE yapısıyla kısaltılabilir.
than + V3
The German economy grew at a faster pace than it had been expected.
The German economy grew at a faster pace than expected.
6- “Than” Comparative yapılarının dışında da kullanılır. Özellikle “would rather” kullanımı ile karıştırılmamalıdır.
Would rather kullanımında “than + V1” kullanımı varken Comparative yapısında “than + Ving” ya da “than + V3 (passive)” yapısı bulunmaktadır.
I would rather read a book than waste time sitting around with people making small talk.
I think reading a book is wiser than wasting time sitting around with people making small talk.
7- “Than” kullanılan bir cümlede Comparative ile yapılan tamlamanın önüne “the” gelmez. Comparative ile yapılan tamlamanın önüne “the” gelebilmesi için “than” kullanmadan cümlede daha önce bahsedilmesi gerekmektedir.
If your business is still the smaller one than others, you should take an action immediately. ✘
Were I to choose one of these two computers, I would pick the faster one. ✔

No other + noun + than + Noun kullanımı Restatement / Paraphrase ifadelerinde “only” ile aynı anlamı karşılar.
No other student than Jack passed the test.
Only Jack passed the test.
DİKKAT!
No / not less + adj / adv + than kullanımı Restatement / Paraphrase ifadelerinde “at least as + adj / adv + as” ile doğru seçenek olarak verilebilir.
They pay their taxes no less willingly than you.
They pay their taxes at least as willingly as you.
Comparatives and Comparatives
Genellikle “Continuous Tenseler” ile kullanılan bu yapı aynı sıfatın veya zarfın tekrarlanması ile cümleye “gitgide ….” anlamı katar. Bu anlamda kullanıldığında karşılaştırma yapılarının önüne “the” gelmez.
Our students are expressing their ideas more and more bluntly than ever.
Should he keep smoking, it will be quicker and quicker for him to slip toward the final rest.

“Ne kadar ….. o kadar …….” anlamı veren bu yapı “oran / orantı” verirken sıklıkla kullanılır.
The more bread, the more calories.
The thinner you get, the better; because the thinner you are, the lighter you are, and the lighter you are, the easier it will be to escape.

Hem olumlu hem de olumsuz cümlelerle kullanılabilen bu yapı cümleye “eşitlik” anlamı katar. Sıfat ve zarflar yalın kullanılırlar.
Your joy can fill you only as deeply as your sorrow has carved you.
If all African pastors were as concerned as Paul about the spiritual condition of their people, we would definitely see a difference on the continent.
DİKKAT!
“as …… as” yapısı karşılaştırma dışında anlamlarla da kullanılabilir.
1- “Provided that” anlamında da kullanılabilen “as long as” bazen karışabilir. Farkları aşağıdaki örneklerde incelenmiştir.
You can stay here as long as you want.
You can achieve anything as long as you want.
You can go anywhere so long as* you don’t drive fast.
* so long as sadece koşul verirken kullanılır.
2- As well as = in addition to
Karşılaştırma anlamı ile farkları aşağıda incelenmiştir.
She can play the piano as well as Kelly.
She has invited me as well as Kelly.
3- As soon as = just after
Karşılaştırma anlamı ile farkları aşağıda incelenmiştir.
I will call you as soon as possible.
I will call you as soon as I have finished the test.
4- As far as = to the extent or degree
Karşılaştırma anlamı ile farkları aşağıda incelenmiştir.
Their house is as far as yours from the city centre.
As far as I know, they will be here soon.

not so + adj / adv + as
Sadece olumsuz cümlelerle kullanılabilen bu yapı cümledeki “eşitlik” anlamını bozar. Sıfat ve zarflar yalın kullanılırlar.
I may not have understood so completely as I do now that this strength was not mine, nor coming from me at all.
Studying hard enough for your dreams is not so difficult as you think.
Olumsuz cümlelerle kullanıldığında bu yapılar cümledeki “eşitlik” anlamını bozdukları için cümlenin anlamı özellikle Reading / Restatement (Paraphrasing) sorularında diğer comparative yapılarıyla karşılanabilir.
Studying hard enough for your dreams is not so / as difficult as you think.
Studying hard enough for your dreams is easier than you think.

Genel Kurallar
1- Bütün karşılaştırma yapılarının içerisinde sıfat ve zarflar haricindeki kelimeler, hatta tamlamalar da kullanılabilir. Bu şekilde uzatılan cümlelerde karşılaştırma yapısını tespit etmek zor olduğu için dikkat edilmelidir.
Sometimes, trying to explain the students all the details may leave them more confused about the topic than before.
Some were not so certain to do everything right as the others were.
2- “not so ….. as” haricindeki karşılaştırma yapılarında “twice , three times…” ile fark “iki/üç …. katı” anlamında arttırılabilir. Bu tür derecelendirme “not so ….. as” yapısı ile kullanılmaz.
By the time companies stop using current monetary system, investing on digital currency will be twice as profitable as it is now.
Public patients, for some elective operations such as a cataract extraction, are waiting four times longer than privately insured patients in public hospitals.
3- “much / little / many / few ” ile birlikte isimler de karşılaştırılabilir.
many / few = more / fewer + Countable Noun
much / little = more / less + Uncountable Noun
Male politicians use less metaphor power than women politicians.
Frank’s only happiness is to get drunk, and to make life pass away with as little thought as possible.
I’ve made more mistakes than I can count.
You can ask as many questions as you need to, but try to learn in as few questions as you can.
