1 – General Ability in the Past (Geçmişte Genel Yetenek)
My cousin could read and write when she was seven.
DİKKAT!
Geçmişte tek bir olaydan bahsederken genelde was/were able to kullanılır.
They were able to successfully navigate through the challenges and achieve their goals.
2- Past Permission (Geçmiş İzin)
Students couldn’t wear casual clothes before 2001. They had to wear uniform then.
I could stay up late night before I was 18.
DİKKAT!
Geçmişte tek bir olaydan bahsederken was/were allowed to kullanılır.
We were allowed to leave work early yesterday.
3- Instead of Can (Can yerine Kullanımı)
Could genellikle Past olarak adlandırılsa da Present veya Future Possibility olarak kullanımı da vardır. Arada kesinlik bakımından fark bulunmaktadır.
They can complete the project next week.
(Certainty)

4- Unreal Present (Günümüzle ilgili gerçek olmayan eylem)
Type 2 veya Mixed Type ile oluşturulan koşul cümlelerinde could ana cümlecikte günümüzle ilgili gerçek olmayan bir durumdan bahsederken kullanılabilir.
If you were more hardworking, you could answer all of the questions now.
(You aren’t more hardworking and you can not answer all of the questions)
5- Polite Requests (Kibar Ricalar)
Could bu anlamıyla da şimdiki zamanda kullanılır. “Can” ile arasında kibarlık bakımından fark bulunmaktadır.
Can I have two glasses of tea please ?
(Less Polite)
Could I have two glasses of tea please ?
(More Polite)
I wonder if you could tell me where this bus gets to.

6- Reported Speech
Can ile oluşturulmuş cümlelerin aktarma cümlelerinde Could kullanılır.
“I can’t diagnose these kind of diseases.”
She said she couldn’t diagnose those kind of diseases.

DİKKAT!
Would “mind” ile kullanılırsa “Ving” yapısıyla karşı taraftan ricada bulunma anlamına sahip olur.
“mind if” eklenirse de Past Simple ile durumun karşı taraf için sorun olup olmadığını sormak için kullanılır.
Would you mind closing the window?

(Asking Politely – You ask them if it is OK if the window is closed)

2 – Giving Advice (Tavsiye)
Type 2 yapısı ile birlikte tavsiye anlamında kullanılabilir.
If I were you, I would + V1
If I were you, I would get another job.

3 – Instead of Used to (Used to Anlamında)
Durum bildiren fiiller “State Verbs” haricindeki fiillerle “Would” eskiden sık tekrarlanan eylemler için de kullanılır.
I would play backgammon when I was a college student.
I used to play backgammon when I was a college student.
4 – Unreal Present (Günümüzle ilgili gerçek olmayan eylem)
Type 2 veya Mixed Type ile oluşturulan koşul cümlelerinde “would” ana cümlecikte günümüzle ilgili gerçek olmayan bir durumdan bahsederken kullanılabilir. “Could” dan daha kesin bir ifade belirtir.
If I had known that you were there, I would be there now.
(I didn’t know that you were there so I am not there now.)
5 – Unreal Present without if (If olmadan gerçek olmayan eylem)
Bazı durumlarda “If Clause” içinde kullanılmadan da günümüzle ilgili gerçek olmayan bir varsayımdan bahsedebiliriz.
It would be very difficult to understand the words in the essay without a dictionary.
(There is a dictionary so it is not difficult.)
6 – Past of Will (Will’in geçmişi)
“Reported Speech”, “I wish…”, “If only…” gibi yapılarla “will” içeren cümlenin geçmiş hali olarak kullanılabilir.
“I will call you today.”
She said she would call me that day.
I wish she would call me tomorrow.

1 – Past Habits (Geçmiş Alışkanlıklar)
Geçmişte var olan ve günümüzde geçerli olmayan alışkanlıklar veya durumlar için kullanılır.
My parents used to smoke when I was in primary school.

Turkish people used to believe that there would be life after death.
(Durum)

Başlıkta belirtilen yapıların anlamı gereği kullanıldıkları cümlelerde “used to” kullanımı yaygındır.

Farklı zamanlarla “be” fiilinin değişimiyle uygulanabilen bu yapı “used to + V1” dan farklı anlama sahiptir. Özne o duruma “alışkındır”.

Farklı zamanlarla “get” fiilinin değişimiyle uygulanabilen bu yapı “used to + V1” dan farklı anlama sahiptir. Bu yapıyı tek başına “alışmak” fiili gibi düşünebilirsiniz.
Getting used to is more difficult than to love.
I got used to you, my only one.
