Kullanılan Durumlar
1 – Geçmişte bir zamanda devam eden veya geçici eylem bildiren cümlelerde kullanılır.
We were watching T.V at 9 p.m yesterday.
Dün saat 9’da televizyon izliyorduk.
(Geçmiş bir zamanda süregelen eylem. Muhtemelen 9’dan önce başlayıp sonra bir süre izledik. Tam 9’da izliyorduk. Eylemin ne kadar süredir yapıldığı bilinmemelidir. Bu Past Continuous Tense’in konusu değildir.)
I was staying at Harbor Hotel until I bought my new house.
Yeni evimi alana kadar Harbor Hotel’de kalıyordum.
( Geçmişte geçici eylem bildiren cümle)
2 – Geçmişte iki eylemin süreklilik açısından farkını belirtir. Eylemin devamlılığı açısından farklar 3 kategori altında sıralanabilir.
A) SÜREN EYLEM – ANİ EYLEM
While I was editing the photo on my computer, the power went off suddenly.
(Düzenleme eylemi devam ederken elektrik kesintisi aniden olmuştur.)

B) SÜREN EYLEM – SÜREN EYLEM
They were listening to the radio while they were driving.
(Dinleme eylemi devam ederken, araba kullanma eylemi de devam etmiştir.)

C) ANİ EYLEM – ANİ EYLEM
When I opened the door, I saw her and fell in love.
(Kapıyı açma, görme ve aşık olma eylemleri aniden sıralı bir şekilde gerçekleşmiştir.)
(Past Simple Tense) / (Past Simple Tense)
3 – Cümle geçmişte bir değişiklik veya gelişme bildiriyorsa.
Our company was getting bigger and bigger until the global ecomomic crisis in 1996.
1996’daki küresel ekonomik krize kadar şirketimiz gittikçe büyüyordu.

4 – Bir eylemin rutin bildirmesi Present Simple Tense olmasına rağmen, geçmişte eylemin rahatsızlık verdiği bildirilmek istenirse always, constantly gibi sıklık zarflarıyla Past Continuous kullanılabilir.
Our former manager was always insulting people for no reason.
Eski müdürümüz sebepsiz yere insanları aşağılıyordu.

5 – Hikaye anlatımlarında betimleme için kullanılır. Okuyucunun/dinleyicinin gözünde sahneyi/yaşanan olayı canlandırır.
The birds were singing their best song while children were playing happily and looking at the cars passing by.
Çocuklar mutlu bir şekilde oynuyor ve geçen arabalara bakıyorken kuşlar en iyi şarkılarını söylüyorlardı.

Past Continuous Tense
Zaman İfadeleri
1- Past Continuous Tense genelde ikinci bir cümlecikle (when, while etc.) süreklilik bildirse de
“at this time…..“
” at 9 pm …….“
yesterday, last night, two days ago
gibi geçmiş zaman ifadeleriyle de tek başına kullanılabilir.
What were you doing at this time yesterday?
I was studying on my exam.
2- When, as soon as, after, before, until, while, whenever ile bağlanan geçmiş zaman cümleciklerinde kullanılabilir.
Bu bağlaçlarla genel yapı:
Bağlaç + Past Simple , Past Simple / Past Continuous
veya
Past Simple / Past Continuous + Bağlaç + Past Simple
şeklinde olabilir.
When she saw me, she started to cry.
(Bağlaç + Past Simple , Past Simple)
The burglar was trying to break into our house when I saw him.
(Past Continuous Bağlaç + Past Simple)
3- While, as, just as, when ile bağlanan geçmiş zaman cümleciklerinde kullanılabilir.
Bu bağlaçlarla genel yapı:
Bağlaç + Past Continuous, Past Simple
veya
Past Simple + Bağlaç + Past Continuous
şeklinde olabilir.
Just as the band was playing on the stage, it started to rain.
(Bağlaç + Past Continuous, Past Simple)
I heard a siren while I was trying to fall asleep.
(Past Simple + Bağlaç + Past Continuous)
4- While ve as ile bağlanan geçmiş zaman cümleciklerinde iki sürekli eylemi anlatmak için kullanılabilir.
Bu bağlaçlarla genel yapı:
Bağlaç + Past Continuous, Past Continuous
veya
Past Continuous + Bağlaç + Past Continuous
şeklinde olabilir.
While we were reading books, the others were writing their essays.

İstisna Durumlar
Durum bildiren fiillerle (Stative Verbs) eylem geçmişte devam etse de “Past Continuous” kullanımı mümkün değildir. Bunun yerine Past Simple Tense kullanımı tercih edilmelidir. Genel olarak durum bildiren fiiller “Present Continuous Tense” konusu içerisinde detaylıca işlenmiştir. Konu hakkında daha detaylı bilgi sahibi olmak isterseniz, ilgili konuyu inceleyiniz.

( have fiili sahip olmak anlamında “-ing” alamaz.)
