If Clauses
Genel Kurallar
1- Koşul bildiren cümleler koşul cümlecikleri ve ana cümleden oluşurlar. Ana cümlenin gerçekleşmesi koşul cümlesine bağlıdır.
If it doesn’t rain tomorrow, we will go to the beach.
(Whether we will go to the beach or not depends on the weather.)
2- Koşul bildiren cümlelerde koşul cümlecikleri ana cümleden önce veya sonra kullanılabilirler. Ana cümlenin koşul cümlesinden sonra gelmesi durumunda arada “virgül” kullanılır. Koşul cümlesinin ana cümleden sonra gelmesi durumunda ise bağlaç cümlenin ortasında kullanılacağı için virgül kullanımına gerek yoktur.
If the project fails, they won’t be able to receive any payment.
They won’t be able to receive any payment if the project fails.

Type 0 General Condition
IF CLAUSE = PRESENT SIMPLE
MAIN CLAUSE = PRESENT SIMPLE
1- Bilimsel gerçeklerde ve sonucun hep aynı olduğu durumlarda Type 0 kullanılır.
If you heat steel with the proper alloy and cool it very rapidly, it becomes very hard.
One’s life expectancy is shortened if one travels in space.
2- Genel alışkanlıklar ve aynı sonucu veren davranışlarda kullanılır ve bu tür cümlelerde aynı koşul her seferinde aynı sonucu doğurmaktadır.
If I read books on my laptop, I get stressed a lot.
Mary gets sick if there is something unpleasant to do.
When* I read books on my laptop, I get stressed a lot.
Mary gets sick whenever* there is something unpleasant to do.
DİKKAT! : Type 0 ile birlikte if yerine aynı anlamı sağlamak için “when / whenever” kullanılabilir !

General / Future Orders
IF CLAUSE = PRESENT SIMPLE
MAIN CLAUSE = IMPERATIVES
Koşulun gerçekleşmesine bağlı verilen emirlerde kullanılır. Emirin tek seferlik veya daimi olmasına bağlı olarak Type 1 veya Type 0 kapsamına girebilir.
Check your blood sugar or have your doctor check it if you get angry easily.
(Type 0 = General Order)
If loading fails, don’t try to set up that software again*.
(Type 1 = Future Order)
DİKKAT! : Emir kipi ile kullanımın verdiği anlam ana cümle Present Simple olmasına rağmen genel olmayabilir!

Type 1 Future Possibility

IF CLAUSE = PRESENT SIMPLE
MAIN CLAUSE = WILL, CAN, MAY, MUST, SHOULD, ETC.
Koşulun gerçekleşmesine bağlı olarak geleceğe yönelik kurulan cümlelerde kullanılır.
If you lock your keys in the car, you should hire a car unlock service.
Possible tragic events may occur if one doesn’t quit smoking.

IF CLAUSE = PRESENT SIMPLE
MAIN CLAUSE = FUTURE TENSES
Type 1 yapısı ile oluşturulan bir cümlenin ana cümlesinde gelecek zamandaki bütün tenseler kullanılabilir.
If they don’t encounter a problem, they will have finished the excavation by next month.
Who will be speaking at the conference if he doesn’t recover until then?
Type 1 yapısı ile oluşturulan bir cümlenin Koşul cümleciğinde tamamlanmışlık anlamı katmak için Present Perfect Tense kullanılabilir.

If I have tried everything and still can’t handle the stress in my life, what should I do?
Type 1 yapısı ile oluşturulan bir cümlenin Koşul cümleciğinde eylemin devam ettiği vurgulanmak istendiğinde Present Continuous Tense kullanılabilir.

MAIN CLAUSE = FUTURE TENSES, MODALS, IMPERATIVES
Type 1 yapısı ile oluşturulan bir cümlenin Koşul cümleciğinde “Can & Have to” eyleme kendi anlamlarını verebilirler. Hatta fiil almadan kullanılarak ana cümlenin fiiline gönderme yapabilirler.
Catch me if you can.
If you have to use a shock collar for your dog, you should be extremely careful in order not to hurt your pet.

IF CLAUSE = SHOULD, HAPPEN TO
MAIN CLAUSE = FUTURE TENSES, MODALS, IMPERATIVES
Type 1 yapısı ile oluşturulan bir cümlenin Koşul cümleciğinde “Should & Happen to” eylemin gerçekleşme ihtimalinin zayıf olduğunu bildirirler. “Olur da / Bir ihtimal ….” şeklinde çevirisi yapılır.
Please do not hesitate to reach out in the future if you should run into any issues.
If we happen to witness an emergency happening right before our eyes, we must take some sort of action to help the person in need.
If Clauses
Type 2 Unreal / Imagined Present
Type 2 günümüzle ilgili gerçek olmayan & varsayımsal koşullardan bahsederken kullanılır. Restatement / Paraphrasing sorularında karşılığı koşul verilmezse “Present” yapılarla oluşturulur.
If the requirements weren’t that high, I could have a chance to visit England.
(I can’t visit England because the requirements are so high.)
Type 2 Koşul cümlesinde tersi verilen durumun halen devam ettiğini belirtmek için “Past Continuous” kullanılabilir.
They would definitely live in different cities if they weren’t having an affair.
(They are having an affair so they live in the same city.)

IF CLAUSE = COULD, HAD TO
MAIN CLAUSE = WOULD, COULD, MIGHT
Type 2 koşul cümleciğinde “Could & Had to” eyleme kendi anlamlarını verebilirler. Fiil almadan ana cümlenin fiiline gönderme yapabilirler.
Would you choose Donald Trump or Michael Jackson if you had to be stuck in a room for two weeks during a severe snow storm?

IF CLAUSE = SHOULD, WERE TO
MAIN CLAUSE = WOULD, COULD, MIGHT
“Should & Was / Were to” koşul cümleciğinde tersi verilen eylemin ihtimalinin zayıf olduğunu bildirirler. “Bir ihtimal …. olsa” şeklinde çevirisi yapılır.
If he shouldn’t be aware, the consequences would be disastrous.
If he were* not to be aware, the consequences would be disastrous.
( However, he is aware and there are no disastrous consequences.)
DİKKAT! : Koşul cümlelerinde her özne ile were kullanılabilir !
If Clauses
Type 3 Unreal / Imagined Past
Type 3 geçmişle ilgili gerçek olmayan & hayali koşullardan bahsederken kullanılır. Restatement / Paraphrasing sorularında karşılığı koşul verilmezse “Past” yapılarla oluşturulur.
If I hadn’t taken a taxi, I wouldn’t have arrived there on time.
(Fortunately, I arrived on time because I took a taxi.)
Type 3 Koşul cümlesinde tersi verilen durumun geçmişte devam ettiğini belirtmek için “Past Perfect Continuous” kullanılabilir.
You would have got bored if you had been doing the same thing again and again.
(However, you weren’t doing the same thing, so you didn’t get bored.)

IF CLAUSE = HAD BEEN ABLE TO, HAD HAD TO
MAIN CLAUSE = WOULD HAVE V3, COULD HAVE V3, MIGHT HAVE V3
Type 3 Koşul cümlesinde “Had been able to & Had had to” eyleme kendi anlamlarını verebilirler. Fiil almadan ana cümlenin fiiline gönderme yapabilirler.
Could you have answered the question if I hadn’t been able to?
( However, I was able to answer it.)
If Clauses
Mixed Type Unreal / Imagined Present and Past

IF CLAUSE = TYPE 3
MAIN CLAUSE = TYPE 2
Koşul cümleciğinde verilen eylemin Past, ana cümlede verilen eylemin ise Present/Future ile ilgili olduğu durumlarda kullanılır. Genellikle Present/Future olan kısımda fark now, tomorrow ile belli edilir.
She wouldn’t be married now if she had studied enough.
( However, she didn’t study in the past, so she is married now. )

IF CLAUSE = TYPE 2
MAIN CLAUSE = TYPE 3
Koşul cümleciğinde verilen eylemin Present/Future, ana cümlede verilen eylemin ise Past ile ilgili olduğu durumlarda kullanılır. Genellikle Present/Future olan kısımda fark now, tomorrow ile belli edilir.
If I weren’t going to give a presentation tomorrow, I wouldn’t have been so busy last week.
( However, I was very busy last week because I am going to give a presentation tomorrow.)
If Clauses
No Type / If without Condition
1- If ile yapılan bazı cümleler şart / koşul içermezler. Genellikle Past olarak kullanılan bu cümleler Type kurallarına uymazlar, “Unreality” vermezler, koşul cümlesi ile ana cümle uyumsuz zamanlarla kullanılabilir ve ana cümlede Deduction veren Perfect Modallarla kullanılabilirler.
If you were that tired, (then) you should have stayed at a hotel.
(I didn’t know you were so tired, but you say you were.)
If the students studied Conditionals, (then) they will be able to answer the questions easily.
(I don’t know whether they studied or not.)
DİKKAT! : Ana cümleye “then” eklendiğinde anlamlı bir cümle oluşursa o cümlede koşul yoktur.
2- Koşul anlamında “will” ile oluşturulmayan “If Clause”, “rica, istek, izin” anlamı verilirken “will” alabilir.
If you will excuse me, I need to return to the office.
(Permission)
I promise you I’ll do better if you will help me make the right choices this time.
(Request)
DİKKAT! : If Clause cümlelerinde izin ve rica anlamı sadece “If + you” öznesi ile kullanılmaktadır.
If Clauses
Conditional vs. Noun Clause
Yes/No soruları ile isim cümleciği yaparken de kullanılan “if”, “koşul cümleleri” ile karıştırılabilir. Bu kullanımlar ayırt etmek için hemen öncesinde fiil / sıfat olup olmadığına ve bu fiillerin / sıfatların anlamlarına bakılmalıdır.
I don’t know if I need to return to the office.
(Noun Clause)
I will come if I finish work on time.
(Conditional)
DİKKAT! : If ile başlayan cümlenin Noun Clause (İsim cümleciği) olduğunu belirten fiiller / sıfatlar belirsizlik bildirirler.
ask / know / find out / discuss / wonder / doubt / doubtful / suspicious / not sure / etc.
