Wish Clauses
Wish / If only
1- Bu yapılar pişmanlık ifade ettiğinden verdikleri anlam daima “Unreal” olarak karşımıza çıkar.
2- Bu yüzden bahsedilen zamanlar bir geçmişi olarak kullanılırlar. Dolayısıyla “Present / Future” tenselerle kullanılamazlar.
3- “If only” vurgu katmak amacıyla ayrı yazılabilir.
I wish he were at home now.
(However he isn’t)
If only he had been at home yesterday.
(However he wasn’t)

Present Wishes
Günümüz için kullanılan pişmanlık cümlelerinde kullanılan yapılar aşağıdaki gibidir:
Past Simple
Past Continuous
Past Modallar (could, had to etc.)
I wish I could play the guitar, but I can’t.
(Unreal Present)
I wish they were listening to the lesson right now, but they are not listening.
(Unreal Present)

Future Wishes
Gelecek zaman için kullanılan pişmanlık cümlelerinde kullanılan yapılar aşağıdaki gibidir:
Past Modallar
(would, had to etc.)
Future in the Past
(was/were going to, was/were to etc.)
I wish the exams wouldn’t be in the summer, but they will.
(Unreal Future)
I wish I could finish the project tomorrow, but I won’t be able to do so.
(Unreal Future)
DİKKAT!: “wish” fiilinin öznesi ve yan cümleciğin öznesi aynıysa “would” kullanılmaz!

Past Wishes
Geçmiş zaman için kullanılan pişmanlık cümlelerinde kullanılan yapılar aşağıdaki gibidir:
Past Perfect
Past Perfect Continuous
Perfect Modallar
(could have V3 / would have V3)
The principal wishes students could have scored better last term, but they couldn’t.
(Unreal Past)
I wish I hadn’t been sleeping when the final game of Euroleague started, but I was sleeping.
(Unreal Past)
Wish Clauses
Usage of "Then"
1- “Wish ve If Only” yapıları “then” ile devam ettiğinde “Unreality” durumu da devam eder.
2- Bu yüzden devam eden cümleler de “Type” özelliği taşırlar ve verilmek istenen zamanın bir derece geçmişi ile kullanılırlar.
I wish we had tried another method. Then we would have come up with a different solution.
(Unreal Past)
If only I were with you this week. Then we could spend time together.
(Unreal Present)
