Restatement / Paraphrasing of Perfect Modals
Restatement of Deduction means: It is (highly) likely that Past / Present Perfect
Restatement of Unreality means: Yet the opposite (has) happened.

Strong Past Deduction
Geçmişteki eylemlerle ilgili güçlü çıkarım yaparlar. “Could Have V3” veya “May Have V3” ile yapılan çıkarıma göre çok daha kesindir. Bu yüzden somut ipuçları olmalıdır.

Can’t Have Been
“-mış olamaz”
He must have studied hard because he answered all the questions on the quiz.
(It is almost certain that he studied hard it.)
They can’t have finished their experiment yet, for they didn’t buy the equipment.
(It is almost certain that they haven’t finished it yet.)

Deduction in the Past - Possibility
Geçmişte ihtimale dayalı çıkarım yapılabilir. “-mış olabilir” şeklinde çevrilir. Çıkarım yapmak için elde olan ipuçları “must have v3” veya “can’t have v3” kullanımında olduğu gibi güçlü olamaz. Tahmine dayalı bir çıkarım anlamı hakimdir.
* ile belirtilen Perfect Modallar iki anlamda da kullanılabildiğinden dikkatli olunmalıdır.
A criminal may have tried to use his underwear to hang himself in his cell at the Sacramento County Jail.
(It is possible that he tried it.)
Children playing football on the street could have broken the window.
(It is possible that they broke it.)

Unreality in the Past - Criticism & Regret
Geçmişteki eylemlerle ilgili gerçek olmayan durum ifade ederler. Kullanım olarak aralarında fark yoktur. Birinci şahıs öznelerle daha çok Regret, diğer öznelerle ise Criticism anlamı hakimdir.
“-meliydi, -malıydı” şeklinde çevirilirler.
You ought to have studied more for your exam.
(Criticism: However, you didn’t study.)
Scientists should not have claimed that Extra Terrestrial life almost certainly exists.
( Criticism: However, they claimed it.)
I should have completed most of the lesson notes until now.
( Regret: However, I haven’t finished.)
Would Have V3
Unreality in the Past - Certainty
Geçmişteki eylemlerle ilgili gerçek olmayan durumla ilgili kesinlik ifade eder. Unreal yapıların içinde özellikle bu yapı Conditional (If) yapılar dışında neredeyse hiç kullanılmaz.
If the researchers had implemented the innovative algorithm earlier, it would have significantly accelerated the data processing speed and revolutionized the entire field of computational science.
(Conditional Type 3 – Unreality in the Past – Certainty)

Unreality in the Past - Possibility & Ability
Geçmişteki eylemlerle ilgili gerçek olmayan ihtimalleri anlatırlar. Ability anlamı sadece “could have V3” ile verilebilir. Possibility anlamında kullanım olarak aralarında fark yoktur.
“-ebilirdi” şeklinde çevrilirler.
* ile belirtilen Perfect Modallar iki anlamda da kullanılabildiğinden dikkatli olunmalıdır.

Unreality anlamında “may have V3” kullanılmaz!
You shouldn’t have swum in the winter. You might / could have been sick.
(You swam, you weren’t sick but that was possible.)
The results were satisfactory, but the team could have mitigated potential setbacks by adopting a more proactive approach.
(However, they weren’t able to.)
Needn't Have V3
Unreality in the Past - Unnecessity
Geçmişteki eylemlerle ilgili gerçek olmayan gereksizlik ifade ederler. Eylem gerçekleşmiştir.
“-gerek yoktu” şeklinde çevirisi yapılır.
We needn’t have hurried because our flight was delayed.
(We hurried, but this was unnecessary.)
If they had simply put a dark plastic over her white dress during that scene, they needn’t have spent money on digitally painting it.
( They spent the money, but this was unnecessary)
Would Rather Have V3 + than + V2 / have v3
Would Sooner Have V3 + than + V2 / have v3
Unreality in the Past - Preference
Eylemi gerçekleştiren kişinin geçmişteki kendi tercihi ile ilgili cümle kurarken kullanılır. Cümle “tercih ederdim” olarak çevrildiğinden 1. eylem gerçekleşmemiş 2. eylem gerçekleşmiştir.
I would rather have watched the movie than (have) slept.
(However, I slept. I didn’t watch the movie.)
Would Rather + SUBJECT + had v3 + than + V2 / have v3
Would Sooner + SUBJECT + had v3 + than + V2 / have v3
Unreality in the Past - Preference for Others
Cümlenin öznesinin başkasının geçmiş tercihinden bahsettiği durumlarda kullanılır. Cümle “tercih ederdim” olarak çevrildiğinden 1. eylem gerçekleşmemiş 2. eylem gerçekleşmiştir.
Her ex would rather she had suffered than (have) enjoyed that pleasure.
(However, she didn’t suffer. She enjoyed.)

Genel Kullanımları
1- Bu tür yapılarla geçmişte süreklilik bildirmek istenirse
modal + have been + V-ing
yapısı kullanılabilir.
You should have been listening to me while I was talking about Tenses in English.
(However, you weren’t listening.)
She must have been studying hard for the presentation during the past week since she was rather confident on the stage.
(It is highly likely that she had been studying.)
2- Unreal Past with If
Type 3 veya Mixed Type yapılarıyla kurulan cümlelerde gerçek dışı durumlar olduğu için Unreality veren “Perfect Modal” kullanılır. Özellikle “would have V3” gerçek olmayan eylemde kesinlik belirtir ve bu yapı dışında kullanılmaz.
We would have arrived there earlier if we had set off in the morning.
( Type 3: We didn’t set off earlier so we arrived late)
If I weren’t flying to Detroit tomorrow, I would have planned a trip to Vancouver in advance.
(Mixed Type: I didn’t plan a trip to Vancouver beforehand since I am flying to Detroit tomorrow.)
3 – I wish, If only, As if etc.
Bu gibi yapılarda günümüzde gerçek olmayan bir eylem için “Past Simple” veya “Past Modal” kullanılırken, geçmiş zamanla ilgili gerçek olmayan bir eylem belirtmek istediğimizde “Past Perfect” veya “Perfect Modal” kullanılır.
I wish you could be here now.
(Yet, you can’t.)
I wish you had been there yesterday.
(Yet, you weren’t.)
I wish you could have been there yesterday.
(Yet, you couldn’t.)
